Final Course Reflection
Final Exam
Mrs. Bittle,
In order to complete any class or course one has to know the list of objectives or requirements required. Not only do these objectives give someone a guideline to aide in completing the course, but help them in learning knew ideas and techniques. In this English 111 class we had five different objectives that were to be completed. Using multiple resources and completing various activities, we have been able to master the English 111 goals and objectives shown on our Weebly accounts.
The first objective is do we “Understand and apply the writing process”. To work to complete this goal we have done many activities and worked with multiple ideas on how to understand the writing process and how to make writing easier. We learned about establishing a PAC, which stands for Purpose, Audience and Context. Before writing a paper, finding and establishing the PAC makes one’s writing easier. By knowing the Purpose before writing, it helps the writer know what to write about and the point they have to make or get across to the reader. Knowing the Audience is important because one will know what type of document needs to written, whether it be a formal or informal document, a letter, or just an essay. Establishing the Context before writing aids the writer in knowing what they should have in their paper. What kind of information or what kind of details they need to provide. We also did peer editing to help us better understand this goal. After every paper we would write, two classmates would read over and help edit our paper so it would be the best it could be. Peer editing is wonderful because not only is someone getting help with writing their paper and having mistakes fixed they did not see, but by reading someone else’s paper, one can learn new ways of writing to use in the future. We also worked as a class to help one another come up with thesis statements. Creating a thesis statement is not always an easy task, and sometimes takes multiple people to come up with one that is perfect for someone’s paper. Each of these activities we completed in class has helped us to be better writers and helped us to complete the goal of understanding the writing process.
Locating and utilizing information for assignments is the second objective which we completed in English 111. To help complete this goal we were taught and often used Blackboard. Using Blackboard helped us to complete this objective because we were always going there to do different activities for different assignments. For each paper we were told to post our first, second and final drafts on Blackboard. We also had to post assignments to safe assign after each final draft had been written. We each had to learn to be very familiar with Blackboard. We also were shown a website called Perdue Owl. By using this website we completed the objective because we learned new places to get information. We used this website to get information for MLA and APA formatting. Going to the writing center has also helped the class complete this goal. This is another place any student can go to help when writing a paper or help with another course. By doing each of these different tasks, we completed this objective very easily. The class learned how to find different kinds of information, how to get extra help if needed, and then how to use it when writing.
Another objective we completed during this English class is how to “Read and recognize various formal and informal rhetorical situations and generate writing appropriate to those contexts”. To complete this goal we responded to questions from our peer editing partner. On everyone’s paper, there were questions they had about the document they wrote and as a peer editor we responded to those questions and helped them to the best of our ability. We also interpreted visuals to find a message that was being sent through that picture. By looking at a picture as a class, we were able to take different steps in helping us find what the picture was trying to say. Also to help complete this objective we wrote different types of essays which were position, argument and compare/contrast. This helped to complete the goal because we learned how different types of essays should be written. Completing this objective was very easy because we worked very hard and spent a great deal of time on each activity.
The fourth objective was being able to produce a writer’s portfolio which demonstrates the ability to generate, revise and edit appropriate narrative and expository text. To complete this goal, each student in the class created a Weebly. On the Weebly each of us have different examples of our writing and different activities we have completed throughout the semester that have helped us with each assignment. Each Weebly has our peer edits and each of our final drafts. It also contains pictures and information a different type of assignment we each completed. There are also pictures uploaded beside some of the assignments so one can see what the activity looked like. This objective was easily completed, because throughout the Weebly, each of us gives examples in our ability to create and edit each type of text.
The final objective we completed in this English 111 class was “Understand MLA and APA formats, citing and documentation”. To complete this goal we used MLA or APA on each paper we wrote. If there were questions, we referred back to the Perdue Owl website. We also had the writing center to help. Each person in there is experienced with writing in these formats and with citing and documentation. During my visit, I was helped with the APA formatting and the citing for it. It is a little different than MLA format and I was not familiar with it. We also worked a great deal on Plagiarism and how to avoid it. We did a few activities so each of us would know how to avoid doing it and how to put text into our own words. With this we also learned how to cite information if we wanted to use someone else’s work. We worked all semester on each of these, so completing this objective was also very easy.
As a whole, we completed each objective very well and easily. Working on different documents and completing each activity helped do this. Almost everything we have done in this English 111 class is on Weebly. Everything is explained and demonstrated throughout the portfolio. We learned many different ways and techniques to complete our writing. Learning to use all of the resources and doing class activities has aided us to fully master each goal.
Sincerely,
